StarNine Technologies, Inc. today announced the release of its WebSTAR Server Suite 4.2. This new release has been optimized for the PowerPC G4.
WebSTAR Server Suite 4.2's processor-intensive Web serving components have been accelerated for the G4 Velocity Engine. The combination of WebSTAR Server Suite and the PowerPC G4 with Velocity Engine will enable WebSTAR to respond faster to requests, particularly those for dynamically generated pages, according to a statement issued by StarNINE.
The WebSTAR Web Server and its WebSTAR Data Cache Plug-in are "vectorized" to fully utilize the 128-bit vector processing of the PowerPC G4 processor. The majority of the other WebSTAR Server Suite components have also been optimized for the PowerPC G4 processor.
Apple's Power Mac G4 is powered by the new PowerPC G4 chip created by Apple, Motorola and IBM. The Power Mac G4 achieves a supercomputer's level of performance with more than one billion floating-point operations per second. Intel's own tests, which are published on its Web site, show that the 500 MHz G4 chip is nearly three times faster than the 600 MHz Pentium III processor. WebSTAR Server Suite 4.2 has been optimized to to take advantage of these speed increases.
WebSTAR Server Suite 4.2 is currently available free to 4.0 and 4.1 users on StarNine's Web site. Upgrades from WebSTAR Server Suite 3.x are priced at $199, upgrades from version 2.x are $299, and upgrades from 1.x are $399.
WebSTAR Server Suite 4.2 sells for a retail price of $599. Educational institutions are eligible for a 20% discount. Discounts are also available for second-server purchases.
A fully functional, 30-day evaluation of WebSTAR Server Suite 4.2 can be downloaded from the site as well.
