Oracle Corp. (ORCL ) today released Oracle Internet Application Server 8i (Oracle iAS), an enterprise-level application server developed specifically for Linux.
Oracle iAS is a Java-based application server designed to offer more than three times the functionality of other popular application servers at approximately half the cost. The combination of Oracle iAS and Oracle8i for Linux aims to provide customers with a low-cost and powerful Internet application development and deployment platform.
Oracle iAS Wireless Edition, featuring Oracle Portal-to-Go, is also available for Linux.
To further penetrate the burgeoning Linux marketplace, Oracle will also partner with Linux vendors. The company today announced expanded marketing agreements with Caldera, SuSE, TurboLinux, and VA Linux Systems.
New shipments of Linux software from these vendors will include offers for free trial versions of Oracle8i and Oracle iAS for Linux. Along with Oracle, they will go to market with Web advertising and developer-focused activities.
Oracle anticipates that these key Linux partnerships and Oracle iAS's adoption of the market-leading Apache Web listener will position Oracle iAS as "the definitive choice among the growing open-source developer community," a statement released by the company said.
"It's a major milestone for Linux, the open-source developer community, and Oracle to offer all of our major applications and the Oracle Internet Platform software for Linux," said Jeremy Burton, Oracle senior vice president, Product and Services Marketing.
"With Oracle iAS for Linux, customers have a complete, enterprise-level software stack to quickly and cost-effectively build and deploy Linux applications," he added.
Oracle's popular E-Business Suite 11i, a fully-integrated e-business applications suite was also made available on Linux earlier this summer. The suite includes Oracle's customer relationship management, order management, 11i financials, human resources, manufacturing, procurement, projects, and supply chain offerings.
Both Oracle Internet Application Server 8i Standard Edition and Oracle Internet Application Server 8i Enterprise Edition for Linux are available for immediate purchase. They are priced at $5 per universal power unit and $30 per universal power unit, respectively. The Wireless Edition of Oracle iAS for Linux is also available immediately and is priced at $150 per universal power unit and $95 per named user.
