A report IDC released Thursday predicts that the worldwide XML server software market will sustain its momentum during the next five years as a steady demand for integration technologies continues.
IDC considers the XML server market to consist of XML-enabled databases, native XML database servers, XML application servers, and XML content servers.
IDC believes this demand will drive the XML server market to reach $3.5 billion in revenue by 2006. The research firm also believes that this was one of the driving forces behind the 163.8 percent growth rate experienced from 2000 to 2001. Another reason cited for this growth was the increase of XML functionality in the application and integration server markets.
Susan Funke, research manager for IDC's Java and XML for eBusiness service notes, "The fact that the market grew so well in 2001, even with IT budget constraints, is testament that the XML server market will be a strong competitive landscape over the forecast period."
According to IDC, XML-enabled databases and server solutions will start to impact the XML server market by 2003 and will maintain rapid growth, resulting in the relational database market becoming the dominant market for XML servers by 2006.
Therefore, "vendors that can commit to the development of XML-related solutions will now be well positioned to take advantage of new opportunities with customers as business conditions improve," Funke said.
IDC also believes that XML database, application, and content servers will continue to grow in significance because of the functionality they offer to facilitate integration for e-business platform adoption.
