This book was written by Marcin Policht, another contributor to the Swynk web site. I got this book with little hope of getting a better understanding for WMI and WBEM, but thankfully I couldn't have been more wrong.
Marcin has put together an incredible book that gives equal attention to both the programmer and the System Administrator. So, wherever you are coming from, this book will help you...a lot.
I never realized how much potential WMI had.....
The book begins with an in depth look at the idea of WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation), where it came from and where it is going. It also explains some of the technologies that help you better understand how the WBEM (Web Based Enterprise Management) layer is built. The main concept that you will have to understand is Object Oriented design.
Next, the book explores the depths of this mysterious WBEM layer to show you exactly what information is contained therein. Just to clarify, WBEM is the industry standard and WMI is Microsoft's version of that standard. The standard is maintained by the DMTF (Distributed Management Task Force). For more information on the DMTF, see:
After exploring the information you would like to use, Marcin breaks into an introduction to WMI scripting. He introduces you to the Windows Scripting Host and to VBScripting.
Next, he begins to explain how to use the information he has just given you to Manage your Windows Environment. You can basically manage entire Windows Based networks from one central location.
The book wraps up with a chapter that relates the WMI information with the Microsoft Server Products (SMS, SQL, Exchange, etc) and a chapter that discusses where WMI is going in the future.

I guarantee you will not be disappointed. There's so much information contained that is available in no location other than this book and Marcin's head.
Let me know what you think of it....
