The suite, initially announced in late April (see "Macromedia Readies Macromedia MX for Production"), offers an integrated collection of tool, server, and client technologies developed to function as a single environment. This is the the first major release from the vendor since Macromedia's merger with Allaire, and it includes products that each vendor brought to the table.
Studio MX includes Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, Flash MX, Fireworks MX, Macromedia FreeHand 10, and a developer edition of ColdFusion MX Server. Studio MX carries an introductory price of $799 . Upgrades start at $599.
Dreamweaver MX is priced at $399. Upgrades from previous versions of Dreamweaver, Dreamweaver UltraDev, and ColdFusion Studio are $199. Through December 2002, customers can upgrade from any previous version of Dreamweaver for the upgrade price. Releases of Dreamweaver MX in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish are slated for a later date. Education, government, and volume licensing is available at this time.
With the introduction of Dreamweaver MX, Dreamweaver UltraDev or ColdFusion Studio will no longer be available as separate products. HomeSite 5 will continue to be available for stand-alone sale.
The ColdFusion MX family comprises two product lines. Pricing for ColdFusion MX Server Professional Edition is $799 per server, with upgrades at $549; ColdFusion MX Enterprise Edition is $4,999 per server, with upgrades at $2,499. The ColdFusion MX for J2EE Application Servers product line, with optimized versions for Macromedia JRun, IBM WebSphere Application Server, and SunOne Application Server are expected to ship in the third quarter of 2002. ColdFusion MX for BEA WebLogic Server is expected to ship later this year. Education, government, and volume licensing is available.
Dreamweaver MX and ColdFusion MX have had more than 530,000 and 185,000 downloads, respectively, since a preview release was made available on Macromedia's site on April 29.
Fireworks MX is priced at $299. Upgrades from previous versions of Fireworks are $149. Through December 2002, customers can upgrade from any previous version of Fireworks for the upgrade price. Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish releases of Fireworks are planned for a later date. Education, government, and volume licensing is available today.
Leading Macromedia MX customers include SAP, Siemens, Citrix, Earthlink, GE Access, and CableCom and rely on an Enterprise Presales Management (EPM) software solution created with the entire MX product family by Blue Roads, a Macromedia Alliance partner.
