The new 181 GB and 36 GB 15,000 RPM drives are designed to help Sun deliver greater, more efficient performance to midrange storage customers. The addition of the 181 GB disk drives to Sun's midrange systems should more than double the capacity in the same footprint, from an estimated 11 terabytes to more than 29 terabytes in a maximum configuration. The company claims that its solution will help drive down costs across the IT environment, from acquisition and administration, to maintenance and software licensing, while keeping power consumption at parity with lower capacity systems.
Also, the company says that the addition of the 36 GB 15,000 RPM disk drives to the Sun StorEdge 3900 and 6900 series is expected to enhance the performance of the storage solutions by 50 percent, while response times for random read and write are expected to increase by more than 30 percent.
The company says that its new high density, cost efficient, and high-performing storage systems, enabled by the new disk drives, will help Sun offer greater asset utilization efficiencies and enhanced performance. Furthermore, the new storage systems may help the company continue its commitment to drive down total cost of ownership and improve storage performance for midrange storage customers.
