Unisys Tuesday unveiled Unisys Storage Sentinel, a combined product and services offering that represents the vendor's first foray into the storage solutions marketplace.
According to Bill Jefferis, director of storage management solutions at Unisys, what makes Unisys Storage Sentinel unique is that it is the first product designed to enable enterprises with heterogeneous storage environments increase their storage utilization by accessing and re-allocating storage capacity from a single virtualized pool. The solution combines hardware and software with consulting and support services.
Unisys' strategy is to penetrate this market with a consultative approach that begins with a free "discovery" workshop to determine the potential customer's topology, budget, assess current storage infrastructure, and evaluate the benefits of deploying Unisys Storage Sentinel. Additional services can include design and project management, networking and system implementation, and ongoing maintenance.
One to three weeks later, Unisys follows up with a fee-based "road mapping service" that will advise the organization toward a solution for its storage needs Jefferis told ServerWatch.
Ideally for Unisys, after that, the enterprise will choose Unisys Storage Sentinel, which the vendor then implements and supports.
According to Jefferis, Unisys Storage Sentinel's advantage is that it enables enterprises with storage environments from different vendors that are attached in different configurations the opportunity to consolidate storage resources in a virtual pool that is managed as one storage network through a single console.
It does this by taking advantage of the fact that most large-scale storage implementations use only 40 percent to 60 percent of their capacity, Jefferis said.
Unisys Storage Sentinel comes in a 19-inch, 36U cabinet that offers redundant cooling and power, fibre channel fabric, and connections into the other storage solutions. Unisys Storage Sentinel also offers snapshotting, and 2 TB of disk for striping and mirroring. It complies with the Storage Networking Industry Association's Common Information Model, which enables it to manage of multivendor storage environments.
Unisys Storage Sentinel is part of the vendor's ongoing effort to simplify data center management, an initiative first begun in March 2002 when Unisys announced Unisys Server Sentinel technology for systems management.
Unisys Storage Sentinel will begin shipping September 4. A standard implementation, consisting of the appliance itself and consulting and implementation services, is priced at $200,000.
