StarNet Communications Wednesday announced version 5.4 of its X-Win32 PC-X server.
X-Win32 PC-X is a low-cost solution for PC users looking to connect their Windows 95/98/ME and NT and Windows 2000 systems to X Window System applications residing on UNIX- and Linux-based servers.
Key to this latest version is the addition of the StarNet's X-Admin32 tool. X-Admin32 enables enterprises to provide Windows users with easy access to UNIX and Linux software. According to StarNet, X-Admin32 was designed to enable Windows users with no previous UNIX or Linux experience to run CAD and CAE applications on UNIX and Linux host systems.
In addition, a new automated Error Logging feature further enhances StarNet's free tech support program.
"X-Admin32 eliminates the need to teach Windows users how to set up sessions on remote hosts. End users without any prior knowledge of UNIX or Linux can now instantly work productively with X Windows-based applications," noted Steven Schoch, chief executive officer of StarNet.
Other capabilities in X-Admin32 allow managers to create sessions to UNIX and Linux servers and save those sessions (along with the preferred settings) to a file. The file can be e-mailed to Windows users or placed in a shared folder on the LAN. Running the sessions from X-Win32 will display the UNIX or Linux applications up on the user's Windows desktop.
Version 5.4 also offers an "Error Logging" capability that captures all system activity up to the point of failure. The data is saved as a file that can be e-mailed to an internal help desk or to StarNet's support staff.
X-Win32 offers high-speed SSH, RSH, REXEC, and XDMCP connections between Windows desktop computers and UNIX or Linux host systems, including Sun Solaris, IBM AIX, HP/UX, Red Hat, SuSE, Caldera, and Mandrake. X-Win32 provides intuitive point-and-click access from Windows-based desktops to Linux and UNIX servers.
X-Win32 is $249 with volume discounts available for commercial, government, and educational users. StarNet offers a concurrent (floating) network license designed to reduces customers' cost per seat. X-Win32 licenses include tech support for the life of the license and free upgrade coverage for all full and patch releases issued within a year from the date of purchase.
A 2-month trial license of v5. is available at www.starnet.com/version54-trial.html.
