RackSaver Wednesday announced support for Intel's Itanium 2 processor with the unveiling of the RackSaver RS-4460, a 4U rack-optimized high-density server.
The RackSaver RS-4460, based on the dual-processor Intel Server Platform SR870BN4, is expected to be available in the fourth quarter.
RackSaver is best known for its high-density individual rack-mounted computer servers, supercomputers, and BladeRack clusters.
RackSaver believes the RS-4460 will offer investment protection by providing socket compatibility with two future generations of Itanium processors and by being one of the first 4U Quad Intel Itanium 2 processor-based server platforms.
RackSaver CEO David Driggers credits the Itanium 2 processor for many of the server's enhancements.
The Itanium 2 processor supports high transaction volumes, complex calculations and vast amounts of data and users. The processor's Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC) design and 3 MB integrated Level 3 (L3) cache. The processor also boasts advanced reliability features, including extensive error detection and correction on all of the processor's major data structures, and an advanced Machine Check Architecture for intelligent error management and recovery of complex platform errors.
"The Itanium 2 processor exemplifies Intel's ability to deliver cutting edge innovations while offering the scalability, the widest available OS and application support, and the reliability that are the hallmarks of Intel's maturity," said Gene Kim, vice president of sales and marketing.
"With our Itanium-2-based server, we have a new opportunity in the media, entertainment and oil and gas exploration markets because of the processor's high performance and reliability, and expanded memory support," Kim added.
The RackSaver RS-4460 will be offered with Itanium 2 processors that feature 3 MB and 1.5 MB of integrated L3 cache and speeds of 1 GHz and 900 MHz frequencies.
RackSaver also plans to release a dual Itanium-2-based system in a BladeRack configuration by the first quarter of 2003.
