Amnis Systems unveiled plans Thursday to launch an edge server platform for distributed video network applications. The server will support simultaneous real-time video encoding, recording, streaming, management, and video-on-demand functions. It will be deployable throughout the network.
The edge servers will consist of a family of preintegrated storage appliances that combine standards-based hardware and Amnis' server software in an architecture the vendor believes is optimized to support network applications with geographically dispersed locations of video encoding, storage, streaming, and video playback.
Enterprises will be able to deploy multiple edge servers and coordinate them with other servers and video appliances using an integrated management interface. The plug-and-play server will simultaneously encode and record multiple live video events while streaming multiple video files to other geographic locations.
Other basic capabilities of the edge server will include:
- Integrated management and scheduling functionality for real-time monitoring, control, and event response for all network-attached video appliances
- Automatic video content distribution and time shift
- Centralized management of video-based network-attached devices
- Live video multicast over WANs
- Real-time event and context metadata capture
- Real-time video stream analysis, processing, and intelligent digital camera control
According to Amnis, its offering differs from video servers targeted at centralized consumer video-on-demand applications because the edge server functions can be deployed anywhere within the enterprise LAN to allow application optimization.
With this release, Amnis hopes to expand its customer base and offer current customers a product to enhance their distance learning, conferencing, and video surveillance applications.
The servers are interoperable with Amnis' NAC series of network-attached streaming video appliances, desktop playback, and network management software.
Amnis plans to begin shipping the first generation of its edge servers in the second quarter of 2003. The vendor expects start offering demonstration of the server later this quarter.
Amnis develops, manufactures, and delivers MPEG network video products for creation, management, and distribution. Its products are used in a variety of applications such as surveillance, distance learning, content distribution, corporate training, telemedicine, video-on-demand and video conferencing.
