The server giant took the wraps off Active Infrastructure, a product portfolio comprised of standardized offerings meant to simplify compute, storage and networking for data center operators.

In June, Dell offered a glimpse at its converged systems strategy when it unveiled Converged Blade Data Center, a product based on Dell PowerEdge blade servers, Dell EqualLogic Blade Arrays and Dell Force10 MXL blade switching.

Today’s launch builds on the momentum with an Active Infrastructure slate that takes a two-pronged approach to delivering converged systems for IT shops that are being increasingly tasked with supporting private clouds, virtual desktop infrastructures (VDIs) and enterprise applications.

Similar to Hitachi Data Systems' revamped Unified Compute Platform, Dell is offering Active Infrastructure in either pre-integrated or customizable flavors. Pre-integrated systems arrive pre-tested and pre-assembled and are bundled with the company's enterprise deployment services.

In a company blog post, Ganesh Padmanabhan, senior manager of Product Marketing at Dell Enterprise Strategy Group, introduces Active System 800, the first pre-integrated Active Infrastructure system offering.

Rounding out that architecture are several Dell-branded enterprise server, storage and networking products.

"Architected with Dell's latest iSCSI-accessible EqualLogic PS-6110 arrays, PowerEdge M620 servers, the new PowerEdge I/O Aggregator and Dell Force10 S4810 network switches, this system is designed for highly virtualized environments with applications that demand performance, agility and scalability," says Padmanabhan.

The customizable option, called Active System Architectures, gives buyers to a certain level of flexibility in mixing and matching IT components and software for virtualized environments and private clouds.

For example, Active System Private Cloud Reference Architectures include Dell Active System 800 for Dell Enterprise Private Cloud and Dell Active System 800 for Microsoft Private Cloud. Application Reference Solution Architectures options include Dell Active System 800 for Microsoft Exchange 2010 and Dell Active System 800 for Microsoft SharePoint 2010.

Active Infrastructure systems, including Active System 800, are set to start shipping in late November 2012 in the U.S. Worldwide availability is scheduled for early next year.
