Mirantis was one of the first vendors to develop and provide its customers with an OpenStack distribution. With the new OpenStack Pike update, Mirantis will still have a distribution, but that's no longer the company's primary path to market.
In a video interview with Mirantis co-founder Boris Renski, he explains the new model for OpenStack delivery that his firm has now embraced. Simply put, Mirantis' current strategy is to build, operate and then transfer OpenStack clouds to its customers so that they can run them on a continuous basis.
A core element of Mirantis' distribution strategy had been its Fuel library, which includes software applications to facilitate getting an OpenStack cloud installed and then operating.
Renski said that as Mirantis moves to an operations-centric model for cloud management, different tools are needed for lifecycle management, which is what the build, operate and transfer model aims to provide.
