Bottom line:

The DL380 is up there with the Toyota Corolla as a top selling product, in this case in the server market. And like the car, it offers reliability, performance and a wealth of features for a reasonable cost. HPE continues to invest in this machine, adding better processors, more memory, NVMe, more robust networking and more. It can function well for databases, analytics and mission-critical applications.

HPE differentiates its server by leveraging capital costs and strong internal security. The DL380 protects capital investment because it can economically serve a wide range of applications including file serving, cloud servers, VM networks, databases, big data analytics, and HPC applications that require GPU acceleration.

The unit loses out to some more expensive models on high-end features, but can cope well in small and mid-sized deployments. That said, it comes with enough reliability, serviceability, availability, GPU options, and Windows Server 2016 support to make it a good choice for general purpose servers in the enterprise.

Product description:

Based on Intel Xeon Scalable processors, the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Server delivers the latest in performance, expandability and security to address most demanding workloads. Reliability, serviceability and availability, backed by a comprehensive warranty, makes it a good choice for most server environments. It leverages Intel’s latest E5-2600 v4 processors with 21% performance gain over the previous generation, plus the latest HPE 2400 MHZ DDR4 SmartMemory supporting 3.0 TB.

The HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9 Server has a flexible redesigned chassis, including new HPE Universal Media Bay configuration options with 8 to 24 SFF and 4 or 12 LFF drive options along with NVMe options and additional rear drive support for expandability and investment protection. In conjunction with the embedded SATA HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i Controller for boot, data and media needs, the redesigned HPE Flexible Smart Array and HPE Smart SAS HBA Controllers allow you the flexibility to choose the optimal 12 Gb/s controller most suited to your environment.

HPE provides consulting and services to deploy, migrate and support ProLiant servers.

User comments on support vary.

“I'm not impressed as you always go to the first-level support first, and it just takes forever to get to somebody that really can help you. They are responsive when you actually do get through to someone,” said a Systems Manager at an IT firm.

“Excellent: the support is one area where I can have no complaints. Whenever a hardware failure has been detected, HPE have responded in good time and the part was delivered within the agreed SLA,” said a System Administrator at a non-profit.
