The good people at Microsoft know this, so they have provided you with a tool to help defragment your hard drive.
To access this tool, go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter
This is what you will see:
Now, click the Analyze button on the lower left corner of the pop-up.
If you need to defragment, you will get the following pop-up:
